The City of Riverdale Planning Commission is an advisory board to City Council. The quarterly meetings are open to the public providing they have cases to consider. The meetings are held at the City Hall Complex, Council Chambers, 7200 Church Street, Riverdale, Georgia 30274.
Powers and Duties:
The Planning Commission is a part of the government of the city. It shall be the duty of the board, and it shall have power, to recommend or make suggestions to the governing body and other authorities concerning the streets, sidewalks and boulevards; the relief of traffic conditions, congestion, and development of housing and sanitary conditions; the establishment of zones or districts and amendments thereto; the use, height, area and bulk of buildings or structures.
The Commission also plans for future growth, development and improvement of the municipality, especially with regard to its public and private buildings, streets, parks, grounds and vacant lots looking toward the proper sanitation, and especially to service by public utilities; to study and propose such measures as may be advisable for the promotion of public interest, health, morals, safety, comfort, convenience and welfare; to make such suggestions to the governing body with reference to an area covering two miles adjacent to the limits of the city and for any and all other purposes of this commission.
Membership, Terms and Appointments:
The Commission consists of five (5) citizens of the city, to be appointed by the mayor, and with the advice and consent of the council. Members of the governing body are not eligible for appointment. Nominations are made by staff members and/or the governing body.
Each member shall serve for a term of five years or until his successor shall have been appointed and qualified or a full term, except to fill vacancies of unexpired terms, which appointments shall be for the unexpired period only. Each new member shall be appointed at the first regular meeting of the governing body each year. All members appointed to the commission shall take the oath prescribed for members of the governing body before assuming the duties as members of the commission.
